Way back in my family tree I am related to Edgar Bergen. However, there is a much
closer connection between his family tree and mine
- my grandfather
and Edgar Bergen shared the same aunt & uncle. The aunt was Elna Svensdotter from
Stoby parish, Skåne, sister of Edgar's mother Nilla, and she married
my grandfather's uncle Nils. So my grandfather and Edgar shared the same cousins, and my
father and Candice share second cousins. I am in contact with a few of these, living
on both sides of the Atlantic.
Edgar Bergen was born in Chicago in 1903. His parents Johan Berggren and Nilla Svensdotter had left Sweden
in the 1880's,
but when Edgar was a young child the family returned to Sweden and to my hometown Hässleholm for a
year or so, around 1908.
Edgar eventually became a famous ventriloquist and his daughter Candice became a fashion model
and later on a Hollywood actress, probably best-known in Sweden for being Murphy Brown
for many years on TV. There is plenty more information to be found on the Internet about both of them.
