My grandmother told me many times that her mother Anna was "Udda-Pelle-Jon's Anna". Anna's great-grandfather was Udde Eriksson (1763-1811) but he was certainly not the first Udde in the family. The name Udde still runs in the family but elsewhere the name is rare today.

Udde Eriksson's g-grandfather was Udde Bengtsson. He was born in 1663(?) in Kringelholma, Hallaryd parish. To the right is his death record from 1748. He came to the village of West Vägla in the early 1700's, and to this very day at least 3 out of 4 farms in W.Vägla belong to his descendants. I descend from him three times.

When Udde got married for the 2nd time in 1744, he was 80+ years old. He fathered his last child in 1746 - his oldest child was 59 then. Maybe he was a ladies' man - in 1727 he was found guilty of having an affair with another ancestor of mine; Nilla Eriksdotter, from Pontansbygd in Traryd parish. This was a crime that earlier meant capital punishment. Hallaryd church records tell about a man and a woman who were beheaded in 1701 for that reason (C2 p.557; GID 224.19.39100). Luckily for Udde, he could keep keep his head!

Old Udde was named after his maternal grandfather. The name is ancient, but going further back than to the early 1600's will probably prove too difficult.

There are two photos from Vägla in my photo album (Panorama).
